Ofsted Inspection Report (February 2020)

St John the Evangelist CE VA Primary School based in Carterton, is celebrating today after OFSTED rated the school ‘OUTSTANDING’, following a rigorous 2-day inspection in January.

Inspectors praised the strong Leadership of the school. The report stated, ”Leaders, staff and governors want the best for all pupils. Leaders are unyielding in their pursuit of excellence in all areas. All pupils leave fully prepared for their future learning”. They were particularly impressed with the way staff seize every opportunity to ensure that pupils understand the world past the school gates and encourage pupils to think deeply about both local and global issues.

The report further highlighted the exemplary behaviour and attitudes pupils brought to lessons, and noted “they display a genuine thirst for knowledge and the utmost commitment to learning”. Safeguarding was found to be effective, with a “strong culture where the well-being and safety of pupils is given paramount importance”.

When asked what the school needs to do better, the inspectors had no recommendations for improvement.

"The Christian vision of St John the Evangelist Primary School is present in every aspect of its life and work. Together with the school’s six Christian values, the vision directs and drives the actions and decisions of pupils and adults. Pupils build positive relationships based on respect and unity. This is because adults and pupils naturally talk about the values as part of the daily life of the school.

Pupils easily refer to the values in their work and play, both in school and in the wider community. Governors and leaders use the vision to inform strategic decisions on issues such as staffing and funding. This maximises the opportunities for pupils and adults to ‘rise and soar’.

Creative support is put in place within the school and beyond for pupils and their families. This means that pupils of differing abilities and backgrounds are enabled to achieve excellence. Staff are grown and nurtured, often progressing through a range of roles to be the best they can be".
